Google Maps to charge for usage

Users of Google Map links for their websites will be charged for heavy usage of the service, it has been revealed.

In early 2012, Google will charge for the Google Maps API service when more than the limit of 25,000 map "hits" are made in a day.

Websites, especially travel firms, use Google Maps to link customers to a view of the destinations they inquire about.

IBM names Virginia Rometty as new chief executive

On October 25, IBM's board of directors elected Virginia M. Rometty president and chief executive officer of IBM, effective January 1, 2012. Ginni, as she is known to many, is currently IBM senior vice president and group executive for sales, marketing and strategy. She succeeds Samuel J Palmisano, who currently is IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer. Mr. Palmisano will remain chairman of the board.

Microsoft's YouTube channel gets hijacked and wiped clean

Microsoft's official YouTube channel was hijacked on Saturday and all videos hosted on it were temporarily removed. The hacker replaced them with others claiming that Microsoft is holding a contest.

"We are sponsoring" and "Make us a Background to Get Subbox!!!" were the titles of two rogue videos published by those responsible for the attack. Meanwhile, the channel's description was modified to read "Wish to Become Sponsored? Message me."

Steve Jobs considered Google's mobile operating system Android "grand theft" of the iPhone and vowed to try and kill the operating system until he died, according to Walter Isaacson's new biography of Jobs.

The Associated Press has secured a copy of Jobs' biography and AP reporter Michael Liedtke is sending out Tweets of some of the best parts of the biography. They detail Jobs' relationship with Google, which was rocky at best.

Ice Cream Sandwich adds a range of new features and a redesigned interface.

BlackBerry outages spread to Canada, U.S.

A technical failure in Europe is suspected of causing a huge backlog of messages worldwide for BlackBerry users, who have experienced three days of outages, Research In Motion said Wednesday.

RIM's chief technology officer, David Yach, said messages coming into Europe from Asia and the Americas to BlackBerry users got backed up and started affecting BlackBerry users globally.

E-mail and messaging glitches that have plagued BlackBerry users around the world for a second day were caused by a core switch failure, the smart phone's maker said Tuesday.

BlackBerry customers on all UK networks and in other countries are suffering from an extensive data outage, cutting them off from email, instant messaging and web access.

The outage began for some UK customers before 10am this morning, with Vodafone customer services saying they had the problem confirmed by BlackBerry maker RIM at about 11.30am this morning. No technical details about the outage are publicly available.

Apple has announced that they have received over one million iPhone 4S pre-orders on the first 24 hours.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
